What is trenchless pipe lining?

Trenchless pipe lining, or cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), is a method to repair damaged pipes from the inside without excavation by inserting a resin-coated tube that hardens to form a new pipe wall.

Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining lets plumbers repair buried or in-slab pipes without digging up yards, driveways, or landscaping. The process involves inserting a flexible, resin-saturated tube into the damaged pipe through an existing access point. Once in place, the tube is inflated or heat-cured, causing the resin to harden and bond to the interior walls of the old pipe. This creates a new pipe within the pipe, sealing cracks, root intrusion, corrosion damage, and other defects.

CIPP works well for drain lines, sewer pipes, and water mains made of clay, PVC, cast iron, or concrete. It is most effective on pipes between 3 and 24 inches in diameter and can extend decades into the remaining service life of the pipe. The method avoids the cost and disruption of traditional excavation while maintaining structural integrity and flow capacity.

Trenchless lining is a practical choice when pipes run under buildings, streets, or mature trees where digging is difficult or damaging. Columbia plumbers offering this service typically use video inspection to locate damage, clean the pipe, and confirm the liner has cured properly before returning the line to service.
